With each season it seems as though there is a new diet to inspire us towards our fat burning goals. As a consequence, we are confused and lack certainty as to which way we should go. If only there was a dietary satellite navigation system to guide us through life’s dining choices.

Many of our choices will be good, some will be bad. It seems that the best way to go is to take a little from one approach and some from another, as not all diets will be tailored to our particular needs. However, we can be guided by certain age old principles that have stood the test of time.

As simple as it gets is the eat less, exercise more plan. Unfortunately both aspects to this are about as appealing as a visit to the Museum of Dentistry Drills. It might to some extent be a case of no pain, no gain, but there are ways of making it palatable and fun.

Low fat eating needn’t be hell if a bit of thought is put into it. And remembering that exercise builds muscles that continue to shift the fat, even when you’re slouched on your couch watching TV after the gym, is positively inspirational.

Cutting down on fried foods can be a massive step in the right direction and in doing so finding tasty alternatives may be possible. Baked potato wedges are an excellent replacement for fries and some might say more enjoyable and filling. But be careful on the carbohydrates, for therein lies an enemy possibly just as dangerous as high levels of fat. If the body receives too many carbohydrates, the unused energy will be stored as fat and there may also be other health problems as a result in the insulin spikes produced.

Low carb diets can offer a solution, but should not be taken to extremes. The quick weight loss that results does not mean fat loss necessarily, as water and muscle wastage may account for part of it, if not all. Metabolic rate might also be affected, and on return to a normal diet, unused carbs seem to turn to fat much easier. Low carbohydrate diets can be good if the wrong carbohydrates are reduced or replaced with good ones and an overall balance of nutrients and protein is achieved.

The issue is not just about carbohydrates, but what kinds. There are simple ones and complex ones, the former resulting in spikes of insulin to cope with the rise of blood sugar when a high carb meal is eaten. Hunger is satisfied but not in a sustained way. More complex carbs release energy slower and have more fibre and other nutritional benefits that unrefined carbs certainly don’t have.

Many of the best vegetables, broccoli, spinach, carrot, etc., may be used as substitutes for high carbohydrate items such as bread, pasta and potatoes and can fill a plate to give a substantial appearance to the meal. The presence of a piece of lean meat is a great addition to this, providing balance as the protein will gives lasting satisfaction compared to the carbohydrates. Now that’s as decent a way forward to the fat burning solution as anybody will suggest in the next 100 years.

Fettforbrenning calculations are seen in many locations online. Adjusting the metabolic rate is not difficult if you stick to a low carb diet plan.
